Ten Awesome Dog Things

I am not perfect and even though I think these dog items are a must have and must use, I don't use them all, all the time. But listed below are things that should become common practice in all our lives. Don't worry they are easy!

  1. A 5ft leash- There are plenty of leashes to choose from in this category, but my favorite is this thick kind with some foam on the handle to help with human hand pain. I also like leashes that have an extra loop closer to the dog. I use that extra loop kind when I have to walk my dog through crowds, otherwise I use the other kind.
  2. A Long Leash- There are times when you have to follow a leash law but you want your dog to have some freedom. A long leash (15ft- 21ft) is also a great tool to have when you are working on recall with your dog.

  3. Teach your Dog to Come- Speaking of recall teach your dog to come! I can't stress this enough. Your dog knowing the command come can save their life, keep them from running off, and make your life so much easier.
  4. Proper Fitting Harness- There is some controversy on dog harnesses, but I prefer walking a dog on a harness. They are less likely to slip their harness, I have more control over the dog, and it can be easier to lift a dog up when they are in a harness.
  5. Dog Seatbelt- My dogs have a hammock and seatbelts in the back seat. This gives them their space, lets them enjoy the windows, and keeps them safe. I want to keep my dogs safe.
  6. Grooming- Whether you do it yourself or pay someone else, make sure you groom your dog. Even just brushing your dog once a week. They will look great and you will find ticks easily when there aren't any knots in their fur.
  7. TOYS- Dogs like humans get bored. Make sure your dog has toys to play with. Make sure you have toys that meet their chewing demands.
  8. Kongs- I like kongs as long as they are well washed. I put dog kibble and peanut butter in them, then freeze them, and my dogs love this special treat.
  9. Dog Bed- I've had some dogs sleep on blankets on the floor, others who've slept on foam beds. I don't think there is a wrong bed but providing a space for your dog is important.
  10. Tags or Microchip- Finally give your dog tags or microchip your dog. I hate seeing the lost pet posters along the road and I wonder if that dog showed up on my porch will it have tags to tell me who I should call? Microchips go under the skin and a vet can scan for a microchip. When that chip is registered it will share the details of who the owners are.
