Ten Bad Dog Ideas
As a dog owner, walker, and sitter, I deal with a lot of dogs, doggy products, and doggy ideas and there are some products and ideas out there that just shouldn't be.
- Retractable Leashes- In theory these seem like a great idea but the number of injuries to humans and dogs from these make them a no go for me. Also you have no control over your dog when using them.
- Greenies- I know these are popular treats for dogs, but after almost having to hospitalize my Shepard due to a severe allergic reaction to these. Then I learned that it is fairly common for dogs to react this way to greenies.
- Prong Collars- These collars have their time and place in training but for the common man these collars should not be used. The injuries I have seen due to the misuse of these collars is just sad.
- Children Stuffed Toys- This one is a no brainer, if the toy isn't made for dogs, don't give it to them. The small glass eyes on children's toys can be hazardous to dogs and result in a trip to the vets.
- Raw Hides- I know these things are made for dogs, but without supervision many dogs will try to swallow a rawhide whole. Even if they succeed in swallowing it whole, this raw hide can create problems later on in the gut.
- Doggy Ice Cream- I'm not sure if this is still a trend or not, but doggy ice cream isn't healthy for your pooch. Just like ice cream isn't always healthy for humans. It's sugary and sweet and your dog isn't brushing their teeth. If you really want to give them a chilling treat in the summer try some frozen blueberries or carrots. Healthy and cool!
- Spring Back Leashes- You know those leashes that have a bungee in them, they are pretty similar to retractable leashes. When I see these leashes it is usually with an older person, what happens when the dog runs to the end of their leash? Both dog and human are yanked backwards and forwards and if your unsteady, you will be on the ground.
- Realistic Duck Quacking Toys- Unless your dog is a hunting dog skip these toys. Toys are meant to help a dogs prey drive, but the realistic ducks could result in you having to pay someone because your dog killed their pet duck.
- Plastic Cone of Shame- If you live in a small house, or a crowded one skip the plastic cone and get a dog donut instead. These are so much nicer. They attach to the collar and allow the dog to move freely.
- Not restricting the dog for car rides- letting your dog ride in your lap while you are driving is a bad recipe for everyone. This is distracted driving.
Whats something you wouldn't give/do with your dog?
